Product Highlights

Product Description

Shimano Stradic gets updated for 2023. The new Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reel takes what is considered by most to be the best mid-tier spinning reel series on the market and improves it. Shimano is always making incremental steps to improve the drive train. They want the reel to be smoother both when it is under heavy load as well as minimum load. The addition of their InifityDrive system does just that. The Stradic FM incorporates Shimano's InfinityXross technology from the Stella which is a solid gearing upgrade. They've improved the way water moves through the reel to keep it way from the important components. Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reels feature seven ball bearings, a great handle and an improved line roller. The Stradic is just one of those reels you should own. Buy a Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reel and you will be a happy angler for the next decade.

Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reels are available in five sizes from a 1000-5000. The Stradic FM colorway is silver and blue. Whether you choose the Stradic 1000, 2500, 3000, 4000 or 5000 model you will absolutely love it!

Models: ST1000HGFM, ST2500HGFM, ST3000HGFM, ST4000XGFM, ST5000XGFM

What Does It Feel Like to Fish With?

This is the part you don’t get from a spec chart — how the reel actually feels in your hand and on the water.

Smoothness

Very smooth on the retrieve with a refined feel under load.

Weight Feel

Light enough to comfortably fish long sessions from the surf or boat.

Balance

Balances very well with 9–10ft surf rods and medium-heavy inshore setups.

Drag Feel

Smooth startup drag with consistent pressure under load.

Casting Feel

Feels effortless to cast repeatedly throughout the day.

Cranking Power

Enough power for larger striped bass, bluefish, and heavier lures without feeling bulky.

J&H Staff Take
““The Stradic 5000 is one of the easiest reels to recommend because it does so many things well.””

Recommended Rod Pairings

If you’re building a complete setup, these are the rod pairings we’d point you toward in the shop.

Jigging World Shogun 2.0 Spinning Rods

Jigging World Shogun 2.0 Spinning Rods

Strong enough for live bait fishing around structure, inlets, piers, and heavier current.

Use case: Live bait fishing for larger saltwater species
Dark Matter Psychedelic Inshore Spinning Rods
Great for Topwater

Dark Matter Psychedelic Inshore Spinning Rods

Lightweight pairing that makes working topwater lures and pencils more comfortable during long sessions.

Use case: Topwater striped bass and inshore fishing
Dark Matter SPS Surf Spinning Rods
Great for Surf Plugging

Dark Matter SPS Surf Spinning Rods

Balanced setup for casting plugs, swimmers, and pencils with excellent casting distance and control.

Use case: Northeast and Southeast surf fishing

How Durable Is the Stradic 5000?

Handles regular surf and saltwater use very well while remaining lighter and smoother than heavier-duty reels.
✅ Excellent for regular saltwater use when properly maintained and rinsed.
✅ Moderately sealed saltwater reel
⚠️ Not designed for anglers constantly dunking reels in heavy surf or fishing extremely harsh conditions daily.
If you want maximum sealing and heavy-duty surf durability above all else, a Saragosa may be the better fit.
WHY WE RECOMMEND IT

The Stradic 5000 is one of our favorite all-around reels for anglers who want a lightweight, smooth reel that can comfortably handle both surf and inshore fishing.

👥
Ideal for: Anglers wanting one premium reel for striped bass, bluefish, inshore saltwater fishing, and general surf applications.
